DAVIS, Calif. -- 12 different University of California-Davis players scored as the No. 5-nationally ranked Aggies upended Carleton College 16-1 at home in the opening round of the 2009 National Collegiate Club Championship. Annie Benisch (Jr., Modesto, Calif.), Kristina Forest (Sr., Santa Barbara, Calif.), Robbie Sims (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) and Emily Muniz (Sr., Saratoga, Calif.) led the way with pairs of markers.
The Aggies never trailed in the game as Muniz tallied an exclusion score at the 5:35 mark of the first period, but the Knights struck back to tite the game 2:12 later when Arielle Rebek (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill.) netted an advantage goal at 3:23 to knot hte game at 1-1.
Davis closed out the period with four consecutive goals at 1:59, 1:12, 52 seconds and 28 seconds to push the margin to 5-1 before the end of the first period, and rattled the cage for five more at 5:48, 5:05, 4:31, 2:16 and 1:45 of the second period to carry a 10-1 lead into halftime.
The Aggies poured it on in the second half netting four more goals in the third and a pair in the fourth for the 16-1 final.
Overall, Davis scored six goals off counter-attacks, one off a penalty shot and three exclusion-goals to move one step closer to the programs first national title.
In goal, Elyssa Thome (Sr., Pleasanton, Calif.) stopped five shots to earn the win, while Hannah Nerenhausen (So., Davie, Fla.) swatted away 10 shots.
UC-Davis will continue the tournament on Saturday, May 2 at 12:30 p.m. against the winner of a first round game between No. 16 University of Central Florida and No. 2 University of Notre Dame, while Carleton will take on the fallen from the UCF-Notre Dame game at 7:30 p.m. tonight (May 1).
