Hartwick Half-Way to Division Title; Knocks Off Harvard & Utica at Northern Championship

NEW LONDON, CT - Hartwick water polo defeated Harvard and Utica on Saturday in the first day of the CWPA Northern Championships at Connecticut College. The Hawks continue play tomorrow against the host Camels and Brown in their quest for their ninth consecutive Northern title.

'Wick took care of the Crimson in its opening match of the tournament, 12-8. It was the third victory over Harvard this season for the Hawks. HC took control early as the squad led 4-0 at the end of the first eight minutes. Both teams scored three goals apiece in the second period for a 7-3 Hartwick edge at halftime, but Harvard would make it interesting in the third as it outscored the Blue and White 3-1 to cut the lead to 8-6. In the final quarter, the Hawks scored four goals to put the game away for the 12-8 final score.

Sophomore Jessica McKee led Hartwick with four goals. Freshmen Allyssa Analytis and Sian Ells-Tewhiu each scored twice. Juniors Kirsten Hudson and Christina Evans each accumulated five steals in the match and Hudson dished out three assists.

The Hawks breezed in the nightcap past the Pioneers, 15-3. The victory was never in doubt as the Hawks led 9-2 at the half, and 11-2 after three periods of play. Stephanie Abajian and Adrienne Holosko combined for nine of Hartwick's goals in the match. Jess Dorman, who stopped 11 shots in the team's first match against Harvard, stepped out of cage for three goals and four steals. Stefani Toungate, Evans, Ells-Tewhiu, and Lisa Bass combined for 14 saves.

Hartwick continues play against Connecticut College at noon tomorrow. Brown will be the Hawks' final obstacle between them and the title at 3:30 p.m.
