Bucknell's Aubrey Rowe Named 2009 CWPA Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces the selection of Bucknell University graduate Aubrey Rowe (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) as the inaugural recipient of the Women's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

The highest honor bestowed by the league to an active player, matched only by the induction of a former player to the league's Hall of Fame, the award recognizes an outstanding senior student-athlete who has achieved success in both the scholastic (3.25 or higher cumulative grade point average) and athletic arenas while possessing a spirit which provides service to the community.

Athletes were nominated by their respective Department of Athletics with each CWPA institution eligible to nominate a female student-athlete for the award with the recipient being selected based on a points system derived from Community Service, CWPA Academic Honors, Scholastic Achievement and All-Conference/All-Eastern Tournament selections over their career.

For Rowe, the award adds to unmatched list of outstanding service, academic and athletic success.

A four-time CWPA Scholar-Athlete and Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic team selection for holding a 3.75 cumulative grade point average while double majoring in English/Creative Writing and Spanish, she claimed a number of career and single-season records in her four years despite battling injuries.

A 2009 ACWPC All-America honorable mention selection, Bucknell team captain and three-time Southern Division Player of the Week, she registered 23 consecutive multiple-point games to end the season as she established Bison season marks in points (128) and goals (75) while recording the fourth-most assists (53) and third-most steals (82) in program history.

Rowe, who set the single-season mark for steals with 84 as a junior in 2008, concluded her career with 358 points and 251 steals, both Bucknell program records, as she led the Bison to an 82-53 record over four years with fourth (2006), seventh (2007), sixth (2008) and eighth (2009) place finishes at the CWPA Eastern Championship.

Her success did not go unnoticed by the league's coaches as she earned her second consecutive selection to the Second Team All-CWPA Southern Division this season for her third All-Conference nod.  The back-to-back second team All-Conference nods added to a career in which she was named First Team All-Conference and CWPA Rookie of the Year in 2006 and earned 2009 All-Eastern Tournament second team honors.

A 2009 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II University Division At-Large Second Team selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), she earned also earned the Bucknell University Lee S. "Bud" Ranck Award, presented to senior athletes "for outstanding spirit and contributions to the Bucknell athletic program," in late April.

Away from the pool, she equaled her academic and athletic success through community service assisting with the Cumberland Valley High School and Middle School water polo teams from 2005 through present and serving as a team captain in the American Cancer Society's 2008 and 2009 Relays for Life.  In addition, she completed community service with her Bucknell teammates, including assisting at Senior Centers and University calling services.

The largest water polo conference in the country with teams in 75% of the states nationwide, including both intercollegiate varsity competition and club competition, the Collegiate Water Polo Association stands as the largest single sport conference and the second largest athletic association behind only the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
