BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Los Angeles' Matt Wiener and California State University-Maritime Academy's Ben Gomez have been named the October 6 Pacific Coast Division Co-Players of the Week for their performance during the period of September 30-October 5.
Wiener netted a hat-trick in wins over the University of California-Santa Barbara (9-7 W), the University of Southern California (11-9 W) and No. 3 nationally ranked California Polytechnic State University (10-9 W) to lead the way with 10 goals and 11 ejections drawn for the weekend in helping the No. 2 ranked Bruins remain perfect in division play.
Against Cal Poly in a clash of the No. 2 and No. 3 teams, he rose to the occassion with four goals and six drawn ejections as the Bruins downed the Mustangs with a last second goal.
Gomez helped Cal Maritime open division play with a 2-2 record as the goalie stopped 39 shots on the weekend in guidng the team against Fresno State University (7-5 W), Stanford University (5-0 W Forfeit), University of California-Berkeley (11-10 L) and California State University-Chico (12-4 L).
Against No. 20 California, he
stopped 12 shots in the one goal loss before blocking away eight
versus CSU-Chico. He smothered 11 attempts against Fresno and
blocked away eight shots against Stanford in a game played although
Stanford forfeited the contest prior to the opening whistle.
