Brown Downs Siena 13-8, Falls to Marist 12-10 at Red Fox Invitational
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Brown University women's water polo team earned a 13-8 victory against Siena College, but then fell 12-10 to host Marist College during the Red Fox Invitational hosted at Marist on Saturday, March 20.
Siena jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the first eight minutes of play, but Brown went on to out-score the Saints 8-1 in the second and third quarter to gain a 11-6 lead. Both squads tallied two markers in the fourth, as Brown came out on top with a 13-8 victory.
Senior Sarah Glick helped lead the Bears to victory with six goals and seven assists, setting a new Brown record for points in a game. Senior Lauren Presant added four goals and four steals to help on both ends of the pool. Leading the defense was senior Stephanie Laing, who picked up six saves between the pipes. Also adding to the offense was Joanna Wohlmuth with two goals and Katherine Stanton with one.
However, the Bears weren't able to continue its success into game two, as it dropped a 12-10 decision to host Marist. Despite taking a 4-3 lead after the first quarter, Marist went on to outscore Bruno 6-4 in the next two quarters to gain a 9-8 advantage. Marist then scored three goals to Brown's 1 in the fourth to earn the 12-10 win. Brown went just four-of-15 on power play opportunities to seal their own fate.
"We just didn't play well today," said head coach Felix Mercado. 'I will give credit to both Siena and Marist, as they both played really well against us. Hopefully we can rebound and play better tomorrow."
Brittany Westerman, Presant and Wohlmuth all scored three goals apiece, while Glick tallied one. Laing picked up eight saves in the cage to lead the defense.
