Brown Bests MIT 8-6 to Advance to Nothern Division Championship Game
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.
-- Brown University freshman Svetozar Stefanovic
(Belgrade, Serbia) scored three goals to help lead the
men's water polo team to an 8-6 win against MIT this afternoon to
advance to the Northern Division Championship.
The Engineers jumped out to an early 3-2 advantage after the first
eight minutes of play, but the Bears outscored MIT 6-3 in the last
three quarters to secure a spot in the Northern Division
Championship game.
Stefanovic led the scoring with three goals and tallied two
steals, and freshman Ryan Gladych (Corona Del Mar,
Calif.) added two. Juniors Brandon Yoshimura
(Haverford, Pa.), Gordon Hood (Carlsbad,
Calif.) and Corey Schwartz (Los Angeles,
Calif.) rounded out the offense with one goal apiece, as
senior captain Kent Holland (Orinda, Calif.) led
the defense with nine saves.
"It's hard to beat a team four times," said head coach
Felix Mercado. "MIT played a good game, and we
were fortunate that our defense was able to apply some pressure and
pull out the win."
The Bears are scheduled to play in the championship
game at noon tomorrow against Fordham University.
