Princeton Downs Gannon 14-5 in Southern Division Championship Quarterfinals
LEWISBURG, Pa. --
The 17th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team opened its defense
of the Southern Championship with a 14-5 win over Gannon in the
quarterfinals on Saturday morning at Bucknell.
Princeton blew the game open with a seven-goal outburst in the
second quarter after earning a 2-1 lead in the first period.
Princeton was 5-of-6 in the game with the man advantage and led
offensively by senior Mark Zalewski's three-goal
performance. Two of the three came on counters and the third came
in a hole set. Senior Eric Vreeland, junior
Matt Hale and sophomore Chris
Cottrell each scored twice in the win.
Junior Mike Merlone made four saves in the opening
half to earn the win in goal and senior Scottie
Hvidt and Henry Fyfe each played a
quarter.
The Tigers are now 11-10 overall and meet tournament-host Bucknell
on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., in the Southern semifinals.
