Brown Captures Northern Division Title 8-7 Over Fordham

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --  In a game between the top two seeds in the CWPA Northern Division Championship at Harvard University, the Brown University men's water polo team earned a thrilling 8-7 victory against Fordham to capture its first Division Championship since 1993.

Despite Fordham's early 3-2 lead after the first eight minutes of play, Brown stormed back to outscore the Rams 5-1 in the second an d third quarters to hold onto a 7-4 advantage heading into the fourth. Fordham wasn't going down without a fight as the Rams outscored Bruno 3-1, but it wasn't enough to erase the deficit. With just 37 seconds left on the clock Fordham called a timeout to try to tie the score, but freshman Cyrus Mojdehi came up with a key steal to seal the victory for Bruno.

Junior Gordon Hood exploded for five goals while freshman Svetozar Stefanovic added two goals and two ejections drawn to pace the offense. Junior Corey Schwartz also added a goal to his two steals, as senior captain Kent Holland was solid in cage with six saves.

"This was a total team effort and I am proud of this team," said head coach Felix Mercado. "This is a great way to head into the Eastern Championships in two weeks. Fordham is a very good team and we knew that no lead was good enough. We will get back to work and be ready to play at Easterns."
