CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Mikey Edwards (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Rowland/Mt. San Antonio) scored four goals to lead Fordham University to a 12-9 victory over Iona College to advance to the fifth place game at the 2009 Men's Eastern Championship hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Goalie Christian Flessner (So., Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) finished with six saves in the contest as the Rams moved to 3-0 on the year against Iona following 15-14 and 7-4 victories in Northern Division action.
The Rams never trailed in the game opening up a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period and carried a 5-1 advantage into halftime thanks to first half natural goals by Victor Bautista Medina (Jr., San Cristobal, Venezuela/Juan XXIII/West Valley CC) and Martin de Jong (Jr., Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Polytechnic) in the first quarter, with a five meter penalty shot score by Edwards, a natural goal by Tim Simo (So., Placentia, Calif./Mater Dei) and a man-up tally by Andrew McKernin (So., Riverside, Ill./Fenwick) in the second quarter.
Iona was never able to overcome the deficit as the Gaels closed to within 5-3 and 6-4, but a late run by the Rams in which Fordham outscored Iona 4-1 oduring the final 4:42 of the third period gave the Rams a 10-5 lead through 24 minutes of play entering the fourth period.
The Rams put the game away in the first four minutes of the fourth period as Simo netted a tally at 6:41 and Iona's Matt Joslyn (So., Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) countered with a man-up score at 6:18 and Seth Tasman (Jr., Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) chipped in an advantage score of his own at 5:16 to move the Gaels to within 11-7.
However, Daniel Munoz (Jr., Orlando., Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) split the Iona defense for a rocket into the cage at the 4:04 mark to return the lead to five at 12-7.
Iona attempted to rally back into the contest with a man-up score at the 1:01 mark as Joslyn flipped in his game-high fifth marker of the day, but the Fordham defense would yield only one more score when Cody Siemeck (Fr., Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) uncorked a blast from the wing for the 12-9 final.
The victory advances the Rams into the fifth place game at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 22 against the winner of a second round consolation game between Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brown University, while the Gaels will meet the loser of the MIT-Brown game at 10:00 a.m. on the 22nd in the seventh place game.
