TUCSON, Ariz. -- Eight University of Oregon players found the back of the cage, while Jessica Kragt (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) made seven stops in net, as the No. 6 Ducks overpowered Illinois State University 14-5 in the opening round of the 2010 National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Arizona.
The victory places Oregon into a second round matchup at 12:30 p.m. versus the winner of a first round game between No. 12 University of Utah and No. 19 University of Central Florida. Illinois State will take on the loser of the Utah-UCF game at 7:30 p.m. this evening in the Redbirds second round game.
Oregon never trailed in the contest and jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead less than two minutes into the game as Beth Gordon (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Lizzy Flower (Sr., Lafayette, Calif.) found the cage with shots at the 6:08 and 5:42 marks of the first period, respectively. Illinois State shaved the margin to one at 2-1 with a tally on a man-up chance by Alex Bielski (Fr., Orland Park, Ill.), but Flower and Chantelle Savoie (Fr., Newbury Park, Calif.) tacked on a natural goal and a man-up score at 3:01 and 1:04 to put the Ducks ahead 5-1 through a period of play.
The Ducks continued to pull away in the second period outscoring the Redbirds 4-1 to take an 8-2 lead into intmerission and cruise to the nine goal victory.
Overall, Flower tallied four goals to earn Player of the Game honors, while Bielski and Christine Byron (Jr., Barrington, Ill.) led Illinois State with pairs of markers.
In cage, Emily Bornhoff (Fr., La Grange, Ill.) and Courtney Monaghan (So., Elmhurst, Ill.) combined for Illinois State's seven saves, as Monaghan suffered the loss.
