CWPA Releases 2011 Women's Southwest Division Collegiate Club Schedule
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has released the schedule for the 2011 Women's National Collegiate Club Southwest Division.
Comprised of the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, University of Colorado, Colorado College, Colorado State University, University of Denver, University of New Mexico, Northern Arizona University and the United States Air Force Academy, the division champion will receive an automatic berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame on May 6-8 in South Bend, Indiana.
The season will open on February 5-6 at the Edora Pool and Ice Center in Fort Collins, Colo. as Colorado, Colorado College, Denver, Air Force and Colorado State will meet in a 10-game tournament.
Three-weeks later the Southern teams will clash at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. as Arizona, Arizona State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico will square-off in a 10-game event.
Final seedings for the Southwest Division Championship on April 16-17 at Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo. will be decided in the division's cross-over tournament on March 5-6 at Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz.
At ASU, the division's nine-teams will converge on one location for the first time during the season as Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Colorado College, Colorado State, Denver, New Mexico, Northern Arizona and Air Force will clash in a series of 18-games to cinch up their berths for the division championship tournament over a month later.
Due to the split of the Southwest Division into the Rocky Mountain Division and a reconfigured Southwest, the defending conference champion will not be back to defend the 2010 crown. 2010 champion and four-time victor (2001, 2004, 2006, 2010) the University of Utah moved over to the Rocky Mountain to join with Boise State University, Utah "B" and Southern Utah University in the league's 14th women's collegiate club division.
Based on history, it could be any team's division to win as six-time champion Arizona (1998, 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2009) joins fellow past champions Northern Arizona (1999), Colorado (2003) and Air Force (2005) looking to return to the top of the division standings with a berth to Notre Dame on the line. However, do not discount Colorado College, Colorado State, ASU, Denver or New Mexico becoming the sixth program in division history to clinch the Southwest's automatic berth to the National Collegiate Club Championship.
