2011 U.S. News List of Colleges That Claim to Meet Full Financial Need

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- U.S. News & World Report recently released a list of 63 schools that claim to meet their students' full financial need.  Among the schools, 38 sponsor either men's or women's varsity and/or club water polo teams in the Collegiate Water Polo Association.

Determining financial need begins with calculating the expected family contribution (or EFC) using information provided on the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA takes into account a family's earning power, size, and savings, among other factors.

Financial need to attend a given institution is the difference between the cost of attendance, which varies from school to school, and an individual's EFC, which remains constant (though some schools will calculate your EFC based on their standards, which vary from school to school, and can produce an EFC higher than the one calculated using the FAFSA). Schools use grants and subsidized loans to help fill the void between the expected family contribution and the cost of attending.

Among the league's varsity institutions, six CWPA members were recognized by the publication:

  • Brown University
  • Connecticut College
  • Harvard University
  • Macalester College
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • Princeton University

Overall, 13 colleges that sponsor varsity teams are listed as Claremont McKenna College, California Institute of Technology, Harvard Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, Scripps College and Stanford University join the six CWPA institutions.  However, in terms of varsity programs, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd and Sripps compete as one institution (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges), while Pomona and Pitzer compete also compete as one program (Pomona-Pitzer Colleges) to decrease the number of varsity programs that claim to meet full-financial need to 10.

As some varsity institutions also sponsor club programs (i.e., Stanford in both men's and women's competition, MIT and Macalester in women's and men's water polo, respectively), 34 CWPA club institutions were also recognized for claiming to meet full financial need to U.S. News & World Report:
