No Changes as California Polytechnic State University Hangs On at No. 1 in Week 14/April 28 Women's National Collegiate Club Poll
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- California Polytechnic State University's hold on the No. 1 ranking in the Women's National Collegiate Club Top 20 Poll remains firm as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the Week 14/April 28 edition of the rankings.
Ranked No. 1 since the preseason poll following back-to-back-to-back National Collegiate Club Championship titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010, the 2011 Pacific Coast Division champion Mustangs garnered 98 points, two points off an unanimous selection and a pair of points in front of Big Ten Division champion the University of Michigan.
The difference marks the closest any team has come to knocking Cal Poly out of the top spot in the rankings and raises questions going into the National Collegiate Club Championship in one week at the University of Notre Dame.
Overall, all 16 participants for the National Collegiate Club Championship appear in the poll, as 14 made the Top 20 and two others fell just outside the cut-off to rate in the "Receiving Votes" category.
The poll is identical to the April 21 balloting due to no contests being held since the division championships.
Behind Cal Poly and Michigan, Sierra Pacific Division champion the University of California-Davis remains at No. 3, while Pacific Coast Division runner-up the University of California-Los Angeles and Northwest Division champion the University of Oregon rate at No. 4 and 5, respectively.
Midwest Division and National Collegiate Club Championship host Notre Dame holds at No. 8, with Southeast and Southwest Division champions the University of Florida and Arizona State University completing the Top 10.
Pennsylvania State University, the champion of the Mid-Atlantic Division, starts the next 10 in the rankings. At No. 12-15, North Atlantic Division champion Middlebury College remains at No. 12, Texas Division champion the University of Texas remains at No. 13, Southwest Division runner-up the University of Arizona stays at No. 14 and the University of California-Santa Cruz rates at No. 15.
