CWPA Releases 2010 Men's Collegiate Club Pacific Coast Division Schedule

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) has released the amended schedule for the 2010 Men's National Collegiate Club Pacific Coast Division. Comprised of 17 programs spread throughout the Golden State, the division will feature 68 regular season games along with 39 championship games during Northern Region, Southern Region and Pacific Coast Division Championship play.

Due to the size and complexity of the division, the Pacific Coast is unique in its format for competition.

San Jose State University will serve as the host of the first tournament on September 25-26 for 18-games with the Northern Division teams, while the University of California-Santa Barbara will serve as the site of Southern Division regular season play on the same weekend with 16 games.

The Northern Division teams will meet once again the following weekend for 18 more games at the University of California-Santa Cruz on October 2-3, before the Southern Division teams lock horns for 16 more games on October 9-10 at the University of California-Los Angeles to close out the regular season.

Regional Championship play will be contested on October 16-18 as the nine Northern Division teams go to the University of California-Davis for 15 games, with the eight Southern squads treking to San Diego State University for a 12-game shootout to decide which programs advance to the Pacific Coast Division Championship Tournament on October 23-24 at California Polytechnic State University.

The division championship will match the Top Eight programs, with four programs from the South and North, in a 12-game format to decide which program advances to the National Collegiate Club Championship at Southern Utah University.

Comprised of Northern Region squads California State University-Chico, California State University-Maritime Academy, Fresno State University, Saint Mary's College (Calif.), San Jose State University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, UC-Davis and UC-Santa Cruz, along with Southern Region programs Cal Poly, San Diego State, University of California-Irvine, UCLA, UC-Santa Barbara, University of California-San Diego, University of San Diego and University of Southern California, the division has been among the most prolific in terms of producing national champions.

In the history of the Pacific Coast, Cal Poly has dominated play capturing nine division titles (1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008) and five national crowns (1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2007).  Defending national champion UCLA holds two division titles (2005, 2009), while former division member California Baptist University (1999) is the only other team to win the division championship.

Overall, the Pacific Coast Division and Big Ten Division have both produced six national champions to lead the way and account for 12 of the 17 National Collegiate Club Championships awarded in the history of the sport.
