No. 10 University of Utah Upends Cornell University 10-1 in National Collegiate Club Consolation Bracket
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Sarah Clos (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) made nine saves to earn Player of the Game honors as No. 10 University of Utah scored their ranking in downing Cornell University 10-1 in Game 11 of the 2011 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame.
The victory advances the Utes into a 2:50 p.m. meeting with Dartmouth College at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday, May 7 with a spot in the tournament's ninth place game at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 at stake. Cornell will meet No. 12-ranked Middlebury College at 9:50 p.m. on Saturday to determine which program finishes the tournament in a tie for 13th place and which earns one of two spots at No. 15.
Due to the limited pool availability and time restraints of a 16-team tournament, the field does not play out the 13th and 15th places unless two pools are available, such as last year at the University of Arizona.
The game was all Utah from opening sprint to closing horn as the Utes posted pairs of goals in the first and fourth periods, while tacking on trios of markers in the second and third periods, to overwhelm the Big Red.
Utah opened up a 4-0 lead midway through the second period before Diana Foster (Jr., Wilmette, Ill.) broke up the shutout try by Clos to move her team to within 4-1 with 2:39 remaining in the first period.
The goal marked the only challenge of the day for Clos who turned aside nine of 10 shots on goal to move Utah closer to continuing its streak of Top 10 finishes at the National Collegiate Club Championship after previously placing 10th (2010), eighth (2009), fourth (2004) and sixth (2002, 2006).
For Utah, Alyssa Woodliff (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) and Christina Sloan (Fr., Ogden, Utah) recorded hat-tricks to lead the Utes' offense, while Lauren Roth (Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah) chipped in a pair of markers.
Karen Swetland (Gr., Cooper City, Fla.) suffered the loss for Cornell with seven saves on 17 shots on goal.
