No. 2 University of Michigan Manages No. 19 Cornell University 17-1 in National Collegiate Club Championship First Round
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Milli Brown (Jr., Rockford, Mich.) and Katie Hazelrigg (So., Rolling Hills, Calif.) both netted four goals to share Player of the Game honors in powering No. 2-ranked the University of Michigan to a 17-1 victory over No. 19 Cornell University in the opening round of the 2011 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame.
The victory advances the Big Ten Division champion Wolverines to a 11:20 a.m. meeting with the victor of a first round game between No. 7-ranked University of Florida and No. 10 University of Utah. Cornell, the New York Division champion, will next face the loser of the Florida-Utah game at 8:40 p.m. later this evening.
Michigan never trailed in the game pouring in five goals in the first period and four in the second period to make it 9-0 at halftime. Following four more goals by the Wolverines to start the third period, the Big Red broke-up a shutout bid by Michigan goalie Marley Andrews (So., Hudsonville, Mich.) with a marker by Brie Reid (Jr., Northbrook, Ill.) at the 2:22 mark of the period for the only goal of the day by Cornell.
The Wolverines closed out the game with four more scores in the fourth period as 10 different Maize & Blue players found the back of the cage during the contest.
Overall, only three Wolverines recorded multi-score games as Kassia Zalewski (Fr., Saline, Mich.) chipped in a pair of markers.
A key to the game was Michigan's ability to convert on exclusion chances as the Wolverines rocketed in two five-meter penalty shots and tacked on three conversions on man-up opportunities.
Between the pipes, Andrews and her opponent Karen Swetland (Gr., Cooper City, Fla.) both recorded four saves for their respective teams.
