NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Jessie Koverman (So., Hermosa Beach, Calif.) scored four times to garner Player of the Game honors and lead No. 13 University of Texas to a 9-3 win over No. 10 University of Utah in the 11th place game of the 2011 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame.
Texas wasted no time in jumping out to a lead as Becca Lewis (Sr., Houston, Texas) and Koverman netted even-strength scores at 6:23 and 5:46, respectively, in the first period to go in front 2-0. Utah responded in short order as Erin Hayes (Fr., Salt Lake City, Utah) converted on a man-up bid at 5:00 and Adri Pachelli (Sr., Salt Lake City, Utah) buried a give-and-go feed at 1:53 to equalize the score at two-all.
However, the Longhorns began to take control of the game 53 seconds later when Abby Edwards (Jr., Houston, Texas) pushed a ball across the goal mouth to put Texas back in front 3-2 through seven minutes of play.
Following a scoreless second period, the Longhorns exploded for four goals in the first six minutes of the third period to turn a one goal mole-hill lead into a 7-2 mountain-sized deficit as the Rocky Mountain Division champion Utes faced a five-goal climb to get back into the game against the Texas Division champion Longhorns.
Lewis started the second half run with a tally at 5:12, before Koverman scored on an advantage opportunity (3:05) and at even-strength (1:49) to construct a 6-2 lead.
Hillary Rodriguez (Sr., Midway, Texas) polished off the run with 1:00 left in the period with an exclusion score for the Longhorns' seventh goal.
Christina Sloan (Fr., Ogden, Utah) trimmed the lead down to 7-3 before the conclusion of the period with a natural goal, but time and a pair of scores by Texas in the fourth period guaranteed a Longhorns' victory.
Koverman completed her Player of the Game performance with another man-up goal at 5:51, before Andrea Jajcanin (So., Southlake, Texas) recorded her first score of the tournament at the 2:52 mark for the 9-3 final.
In cage, Bridgette McMahan
(Fr., Houston, Texas) earned the win for Texas with eight
saves, while Utah's Sarah Clos (Sr., Salt Lake City,
Utah) accepted the loss with three saves.
