Gordon Does the Trick as No. 11 University of Oregon Cages No. 16 Lindenwood University 11-5 in National Collegiate Club Championship Opening Round
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- Player of the Game Beth Gordon (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) scored three times to lead all scorers as No. 11 University of Oregon picked up an 11-5 win against Lindenwood University in the opening round of the 2011 Women's National Collegiate Club Championship at the University of Notre Dame's Rolfs Aquatic Center.
The Northwest Division champion Ducks will next be in action at 10:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 7 against the victor of another first round game between the host and No. 6-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and No. 13 University of Texas. Lindenwood will face the loser of the Irish-Longhorns game at 6:20 p.m. this evening in a consolation bracket contest.
A key to the game was Oregon's ability to lift-off to a quick lead and hang on during a furious Lions' offensive roar during the second period.
Chantelle Savoie (So., Newbury Park, Calif.) started the scoring with 5:19 left in the first period as she tossed in an even-strengh tally to make it 1-0. Gordon followed in the waning moments of the opening frame with a marker of her own with 2:02 on the clock to build a 2-0 Oregon lead through seven minutes of action.
However, the Lions began to stir as Dee Fleuriot (Sr., Durbin, South Africa) swished a shot off a man-up chance at the 6:42 mark of the second period to slice the lead in half. Shelby Hansen (So., Gresham, Ore.) returned Oregon to a two-score advantage at 6:39 with her first of two scores on the day, but Lindenwood countered with consecutive strikes by Nikki Andre (Sr., Mundelein, Ill.) and Meghann Kopecky (Fr., Harare, Zimbabwe) at 5:21 and 4:50, respectively, to knot the score at 3-to-3.
Needing an offensive surge to pull away from the Lions, Oregon received three scores in less than two minutes. Hilary Wilcox (Jr., Portland, Ore.) ignited the run by beating the Lions' defense at 4:28 before Hannah Jarman Miller (Jr., Beaverton, Ore.) and Katie Peront (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) contributed man-up scores at 3:47 and 2:32, respectively, to build the lead to 6-3.
However, Lindenwood would not go silently into the sun without a comeback bid as Gabrielle Thonton (Fr., Saline, Mich.) and Kopecky lit up the scoreboard at 1:57 and 12 seconds, respectively, to pull the Lions to within 6-5 prior to the halftime whistle.
Facing the possibility of another Lions' offensive explosion, the Ducks through water on Lindenwood's plans with even-strength scores by Jeanette Lo (So., Oakland, Calif.) and Hansen at 4:25 and 3:49 to return a three-goal margin (8-5) to Oregon.
The scoring spread widened to 10-5 midway through the fourth period as Gordon and Haley Vigeland (Jr., Salem, Ore.) converted on man-up chances at 5:06 and 4:38, respectively.
Needing their seven-minute second period output in the remaining four minutes of the fourth period, the Lions could not slash and claw their way out of a significant scoring hole.
Gordon closed out any hopes of a Lions' comeback try at 4:18 as she added her final tally of the day to complete "the trick" and lead her flock to an 11-5 victory.
Between the pipes, Kelsey Fanshier (Sr., Beaverton, Ore.) recorded five saves in picking up the victory, while CJ Cherry (Fr., Eagleville, Tenn.) suffered the loss for Lindenwood with nine stops.
