Brown University Handles CSU Bakersfield, Falls to CSU East Bay in Overtime on Second Day of Roadrunner Invitaitonal II

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- The Brown University women's water polo team defeated host CSU Bakersfield, 9-8, but fell 12-11 in overtime to CSU East Bay on the second day of the California State University-Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational II.

Against the Roadrunners, Cal State Bakersfield jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first eight minutes, but the Bears knocked in four goals in the second and held their opponent to three to even the score at 5-5.

The Bears outscored the Roadrunners 3-1 in the third quarter, but were edged 2-1 in the fourth, but the Bears still came out on top with a one-goal win.

Sarah Presant, Madison Pepper and Claudia Ruiz tallied two goals apiece, while Emily McNamara, Kate Woods and Samantha Ryu added one each. Evan Cranston had a solid game for the Bears in net picking up 12 saves.

Cal State East Bay took an immediate lead over the Bears in game two, outscoring Bruno 4-2 in the first quarter. The Bears cut their deficit to one after a 4-3 second quarter, and both teams put in two goals in the third as East Bay had a 9-8 lead heading into the final eight minutes.

Bruno came out and outscored their opponent 2-1 to tie the score 10-10 in the fourth quarter to put the game into overtime. Brown scored one goal in the first overtime, but then Cal State East Bay tied it up 11-11 in the second overtime period. East Bay was able to shut down Brown in the final OT as Sophie Armstrong put in with game-winner with just 15 seconds left in the period.

McNamara led the scoring with four goals, while Pepper knocked in three. Also scoring was Ryu and Presant with two each.
