CLINTON, N.Y. -- Noah Perwin (Sr., Miami Shores, Fla.) scored four times to notch a hat-trick, earn Player of the Game honros and lead the Polar Bears of Bowdoin College to a 7-4 victory over the Middlebury College Panthers in first round action at the 2011 Men's Division III Collegiate Club Championship at Hamilton College.
With the victory, the Polar Bears advance to a meeting with Grinnell College at 7:45 p.m. this evening in the tournament semifinals. Middlebury will face New York University at 6:30 p.m. with a place in the tournament’s fifth place game on the line.
The game was a story of halves as Middlebury jumped out to a 3-1 lead by halftime, but saw Perwin put away three of his goals in the final 14 minutes of play to earn Player of the Game honors and guide the Polar Bears one step closer to capturing the program’s first Division III National Collegiate Club Championship.
Austin Bergeron (Jr., Plainsville, Conn.) opened the scoring for the Panthers as he found the back of the cage with 4:34 left in the first period to stake Middlebury to a 1-0 lead. Following a strike by Patrick Li (So., Hong Kong) to push the Panthers out in front 2-0 at the 2:54 mark, the Polar Bears offense’ thawed and Perwin netted his first tally of the afternoon with 4:40 showing on the period clock to move Bowdoin back to within 2-1 through seven minutes of action.
Middlebury got the goal back in the second period as Nick Daly (Sr., Cape Elizabeth, Maine) beat the buzzer with a sinking shot that sailed past Bowdoin netminder Alex Edison (Jr., West Salem, Ore.) to make it 3-1 with four seconds left in the first half.
The Panthers continued to pull away to begin the third period as Andre Keiser (Sr., Palo Alto, Calif.) converted on a man-up chance with 4:21 on the clock to make it a 4-1 game.
The tide turned nine seconds later when Perwin collected a pass and zipped a shot into the cage with 4:12 to go and begin Bowdoin’s comeback.
Following a tally by Spencer Vespole (Jr., Montclair, N.J.) at 3:45 to close the gap to 4-3, Daniel Byrnes (Fr., Miami Beach, Fla.) burned Middlebury at 3:12 for the equalizer to make it a 4-4 game entering the fourth period.
Needing a hero down the stretch, Perwin answered for Bowdoin connecting on scoring shots at 2:21 and 1:01 to put the Polar Bears ahead 6-4 before Edward Googins (Jr., South Portland, Maine) iced the victory with 45 ticks on the game clock for the 7-4 final.
In cage, Edison stopped six shots to pick up the win, while Ben Weinberg (Sr., Greenwich, Conn.) and Erik Shaw (Sr., La Canada, Calif.) combined for eight saves guarding the iron for Middlebury.
