Strong Start Fuels No. 1 Stanford Past No. 13 Indiana University, 14-1
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1 Stanford Cardinal jumped out to a four-goal lead through one quarter and never looked back, defeating the No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers (1-3) women’s water polo team 14-1 on Sunday at the Michigan Kick-Off.
"Stanford is a very talented squad and they played well," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "I liked our effort out there today. We’ll take some things away from this and improve as we move forward."
Jakie Köhli scored the lone Indiana goal in the contest. Cassie Wyckoff had five saves and three steals for the Hoosiers.
The two squads were scoreless for the opening 3:48 before Stanford got on the board with a skip shot goal. The Cardinal posted three more first quarter goals, followed by a five-goal second quarter to grab a 9-0 lead at the half.
During the third period, Stanford tacked on two goals in a span of 50 seconds to extend their lead to 11-0.
The Hoosiers found the cage at the 3:06 mark of the third period when Kelsey Campbell earned a five-meter penalty shot, which Köhli converted into the upper-left corner.
Stanford came back with two additional third quarter goals, followed by the game’s only fourth period score to make it 14-1.
