LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell University women's water polo team broke open a game that was tied at halftime by outscoring Wagner College 5-0 in the third quarter en route to an 11-4 victory Saturday evening on the second day of the Bison Invitational at Kinney Natatorium.
Junior Ariel Frankeny (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley), sophomore Tara Murao (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and freshmen Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Heather Smith (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart) registered two goals apiece for Bucknell, which netted exactly 11 goals for the third straight outing and has outscored its opponents 33-12.
Five different Bison scored in the decisive third period as the score went from 3-3 at the beginning of the third frame to 8-3 when Valdes found the back of the net as the final horn sounded. Smith then tallied on the opening possession of the fourth quarter, giving the Bison a six-goal cushion, their largest at that point in the contest.
Bucknell's defense recorded double-figure steals for the third straight game as it had 13, led by four from Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto). Additionally, freshman goalie Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) totaled eight saves in her first career start. She had a total of 14 stops in 48 minutes of playing time in Saturday's two games.
Chelsea Beck scored all four of Wagner's goal. The Seahawks, who defeated Mercyhurst College in overtime in the first game of the day, fell to 1-1 on the season.
