Bucknell University's Julianne Valdes Named February 14 Western Division Player & Rookie of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Julianne Valdes (Fr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) of Bucknell University becomes only the third player in league history to garner both division Player and Rookie of the Week honors in the same seven-day period as she picked up the February 14 Women's Varsitty Western Division Player and Rookie of the Week awards.
In the history of the league, she joins two other players who have accomplished the feat of earning both the Rookie and Player of the Week awards in the same week. George Washington University's Allison Peotter (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) earned the March 23, 2009 Southern Division Player and Rookie of the Week awards, while the University of Maryland's Elina Goldenberg (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) achieved the same mark in the Southern Division less than a month later on April 20, 2009.
Playing at home in the Bison Invitational, Valdes started her collegiate career with a flourish tallying 11 goals, five assists, four steals and nine ejections drawn in leading the Bison to victories over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (11-7 W), Gannon University (11-1 W), Wagner College (11-4 W) and Siena College (11-8 W).
Aginast Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, she posted four goals with two assists, a steal and four ejections drawn. Her four-goal total marked the most markers by a Bison freshman in a season-opener since Aubrey Rowe scored four in Bucknell's first game of the 2006 campaign.
She tacked on three goals with an assist, two steals and an ejection drawn against Gannon, before chipping in a pair of goals with an assist and an ejection drawn versus Wagner.
Valdes concluded the weekend with two goals, an assist, a steal and two ejections drawn versus Siena as the Bison concluded the weekend with a perfect 4-0 mark.
