Gannon University Holds Off Carthage 15-9 in Home Opener
ERIE, Pa. -- The
Gannon University women’s water polo team used a 4-0
advantage in the third quarter to earn its first victory of the
year over Carthage College at home in the Carneval Athletic
Pavilion.
The Lady Knights trailed after the first eight minutes with the
Lady Reds holding a 3-2 advantage. Gannon responded in the second
period, exploding for six goals. Molly Andrews
(Tustin, Calif./Tustin) netted three of the six goals for
Gannon in the period, giving the Lady Knights an 8-6 edge at the
half.
Gannon turned up the defensive pressure in the second half,
shutting out Carthage in the third quarter. The Lady Knights netted
four goals, two from Andrews, to lead 12-6 heading into the final
quarter. Three more Gannon goals in the fourth sealed up the 15-9
win for the Lady Knights.
As a team, Gannon recorded 18 steals compared to just 12 turnovers
in the match. Seven different Lady Knights recorded goals, with
four adding assists.
Andrews finished with five goals, while Colleen Harriger
(Erie, Pa./McDowell) added four. Kelley Steininger
(Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) netted two scores. In
goal, Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas / Clear Brook)
recorded a total of six blocks, with four of them coming in the
third period.
Gannon improves to 1-11 this season, while Carthage falls to 0-2
in varsity play.
