ERIE, Pa. -- Gannon University fell behind 7-2 at halftime and was never able to climb all the way back during an 11-5 loss to rival Mercyhurst College in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division action at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
Mercyhurst ended the first quarter with a little momentum after snapping a 2-2 tie with the final two goals. The Lakers then shutout the Lady Knights 3-0 in the second quarter and headed into the intermission with a 7-2 advantage.
The visitors extended the lead to 8-2 on Rachel Griepsma's goal 1:29 into the second half. Gannon finally stopped the six-goal run with Colleen Harriger's (Erie, Pa./McDowell) second goal of the match with 3:48 left in the third quarter. The score also brought an end to Gannon's scoreless stretch that lasted exactly 15 minutes and spanned three quarters.
Mercyhurst responded with three more goals, before ending the third quarter with an 11-3 lead. Harriger and Molly Andrews (Tustin, Calif./Tustin) netted goals in the final frame to account for the final 11-5 score.
Harriger finished with three goals while Andrews produced the other two. Libbie Guina (Houston, Texas/Clear Brook) recorded three saves in defeat.
Gannon dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the CWPA Western Division with the loss. Mercyhurst improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
