WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Freshman Rachael Bentley scored twice to jumpstart George Washington University's game-ending 9-0 run in a 13-5 triumph over Villanova University during the Colonials Invite at Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
GW (4-12) trailed Villanova (3-15) by two after the first quarter and 4-2 with 3:37 left before halftime. Bentley and senior Melissa Sesana scored to briefly even it at 4-4, but the Wildcats again took the lead 79 seconds before intermission.
The Colonials rolled from there as Bentley added her second goal with 19 seconds left to knot it at 5-5 heading into halftime, then completed her hat trick 1:16 into the second half to give the hosts the lead for good at 6-5.
Rookie Katherine Berry made it 7-5 less than two minutes later, junior Allison Peotter converted a steal and breakaway chance at the 3:48 mark of the third quarter and freshman Adina Zepfel capped the momentum-shifting quarter with a backhand goal from her center position with 11 seconds to go in the period to make it 9-5.
While GW added four additional goals in the fourth quarter to dominate the second half, the Colonials' defense excelled over the final 16 minutes to aid in clinching the victory. Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou made four of her nine saves in the second half and Peotter added four of GW's 17 steals to keep the Wildcats scoreless the final 17:19 of the contest.
Bentley added two assists to finish with five points, followed by a goal, two assists and three steals from senior Erin Delker. Peotter, Sesana, junior Megan Walker and freshmen Megan Brolley and Allison Littlejohn each totaled two points.
