PROVIDENCE, RI - Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons and honored guests took part in a Topping Off Ceremony on April 6, 2011, with the final beam being hoisted in place for the Nelson Fitness Center, the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center, the Ittleson Quadrangle and the David Zucconi '55 Varsity Strength and Conditioning Center.
Brown Director of Athletics & Recreation Michael Goldberger welcomed the group of 200 students, alumni, staff and donors, and was followed by SAAC president Sam Speroni '11, President Simmons and architect Robert Stern. President Simmons talked about this being the first phase of an enhanced athletic complex, and thanked all those involved with the funding of the project, summarizing the team effort that went into the building of the new athletic complex. Members of the men's and women's swimming and water polo teams were also in attendance.
All invitees were given the opportunity to sign the four beams that were hoisted from the ground onto the top of the new structure, which formed the platform for the Marvel Gymnasium cupola.
