UTICA, N.Y. -- The Utica College women's water polo team lost to rival Connecticut College in non-league action, 8-7. Amanda Sulicz led the Pioneers with a hat trick on her Senior Night.
In the first quarter, the Camels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before sophomore Jennifer Persio netted Utica's first goal with 3:03 left in the quarter. Connecticut responded with a goal of their own 30 seconds later to push their lead to 3-1. Sulicz cut the lead to one when she scored the first of her three goals. Utica would end the first quarter down 4-2.
The Pioneers would net one goal in the second quarter by Sulicz and would go into halftime down 6-3.
In the third quarter, the Pioneers and Camels each traded goals as Persio scored her second goal of the game to make the score 7-4 in favor of Connecticut.
Utica opened up the fourth quarter when Sulicz scored her third goal of the game, cutting the deficit 7-5. The Camels answered right back when Emily Hunter scored her third goal of the game. Freshman Evelyn Kurzac netted her 48th goal of the season when she cut the lead to two goals with 4:46 left in the game. Classmate Jacqueline Braca brought Utica within one goal when she scored with 2:10 left. The Pioneers rally would fall short, however, as the Camels escaped with a narrow victory.
Senior goalie Kera Langdon recorded nine saves in the loss. Braca and Kurzac combined for 13 steals. Freshman Rebecca Morgan contributed with two assists.
