Mercyhurst College Sweeps Season Series with Gannon Courtesy 14-9 Win
ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst College women's water polo team jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the break and never looked back as the Lakers rolled to a 14-9 victory over cross-town rival Gannon University at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
The Lakers, who improved to 14-8
leading into their final game of the regular season tomorrow
against Bucknell University scored five times in the first quarter
and twice in the second, before Gannon got its only scoring
advantage of the game, 6-4, in the third. Both teams closed out the
game with three goals aside in the fourth.
Five different players contributed offense as Mercyhurst swept the
season series against the Golden Knights, 2-0.
Freshman Rebecca Wright led all scorers in the
game with four goals and seven points. Senior Nicole
Nelson recorded six goals, classmate Rachel
Griepsma scored twice and dished out four assists, and
sophomore Lisett Calderon and junior Laura
Hennessey each netted one goal apiece.
Junior Hope Rozelle earned the win in goal with 13 saves and nine goals against.
