ERIE, Pa. -- Kandis Canonica (Burlingame, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) tied the Bucknell single-game record with 10 points (5g, 5a) and Haley Prickett (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) scored a season-high five goals as the Bison women’s water polo team set a school record with 26 goals in a 26-6 victory at Gannon University. The win helped Bucknell to a 1-1 record on the day as it lost to Mercyhurst College, 13-10, earlier in the afternoon.
Julianne Valdes (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) dished out six assists in the win over the Golden Knights, equaling Canonica’s single-game record, which she has achieved three times in her career. Overall, the Bison (11-15, 1-3 CWPA Western Division) had a record 24 assists on their record 26 goals.
Eight different Bison posted multi-goal games against Gannon as they broke the previous single-game goal mark by seven. Nineteen had been the single-game standard, last reached in a 19-4 victory over the Golden Knights at last year’s Bison Invitational.
Another record set Saturday night was Bucknell’s largest goal differential in a win. The previous record of 16 had been set three times (twice in 2000, once in 2003).
Goalie Rena Heim (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) posted a career-high 12 saves in the nightcap victory, pushing her season total to 119.
Canonica’s 10 points tied the program record originally set by Julie McLaughlin in 2001 and tied by Aubrey Rowe in 2006.
Canonica was one of seven Bucknell players with a single goal in the opening game, a three-goal loss to the Lakers. Hallie Kennan (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) had the best offensive showing, posting three goals and two assists. The Bison faced an 8-4 deficit at halftime and were unable to overcome it in the second half as they lost to Mercyhurst for the first time in four all-time meetings.
