COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Katie Ermakova scored three goals and Christine Goetsch, Allison Campbell and Elina Goldenberg added two apiece to lead the University of Maryland to a 13-10 win over Brown University in its regular-season finale.
The victory was the fifth straight for the Terrapins (17-13, 4-0) who claimed the outright Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division title.
Maryland's 12-10 win over Harvard earlier in the day clinched the division crown, its first since 2009.
"I'm proud of the team," Maryland head coach Carl Salyer said. "We prepared well and battled each game."
Goals by Ermakova, Goldenberg and Jessica Ernst in a two-minute span of the third quarter broke open a 7-6 game.
"We really separated ourselves in the third quarter," Salyer said. "We got the counterattack going and took advantage of our speed. We let then back in it in the fourth, but we hung on."
Goldenberg's second score made it 12-7 with 1:00 left in the third quarter, but Brown (10-15, 1-3) answered with three straight goals.
However, Rachel Stein, who went the distance in net, had three of her eight saves in the final quarter and Campbell added an insurance goal with 59 seconds left in the game.
Kate Woods had a game-high four goals for Brown and goalie Sarah Shin turned away nine Maryland shots.
Salyer feels the Terps are peaking at the right time.
"It was a great weekend to build confidence for the conference championship," Salyer said. "We set ourselves up well, but we'll have three tough games."
The CWPA Eastern Championship is scheduled for April 29-May 1 in Bloomington, Ind. at the University of Indiana.
