University of Maryland's Shelby Reyes Named April 18 Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- University of Maryland goalie Shelby Reyes (Jr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made 24 saves in two games at home to earn the April 18 Women's Varsity Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week award for helping the Terrapins claim the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division title.
Facing No. 17-ranked Princeton University Tigers on Saturday, she blocked nine shots in a 7-5 victory. Reyes stopped a five-meter penalty shot with 4:20 left in the game and made another key save with two minutes left to preserve the win and the Terrapins' Southern Division title hopes.
She recorded one of her best performances of the season on Sunday posting a career-high 15 saves in a 12-10 victory over Harvard University as Maryland locked up the Southern Division title.
Reyes made five saves in the third quarter versus the Crimson, including one from point-blank range with less than 30 seconds left in the period. In the fourth period with Maryland leading 12-9, she turned aside a breakaway chance with 2:14 left in the game to turn the stiffle the Harvard offense as the Terrapins claimed a two-goal victory.
