COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland water polo team signed two players - Danielle Robinson of Vancouver, Canada, and Zoe Respondek of Miami Shore, Fla. - to National Letters of Intent. The pair will join the Terps for the 2011-12 season.
"We're very excited to have both Danielle and Zoe," head coach Carl Salyer said. "They're going to add depth to our program right away, and we are expecting big things from both of them in the upcoming season."
Robinson was selected to play on Water Polo Canada's Canadian Select League this season. Water Polo Canada also identified her as one of the top 25 in Junior National Team tryouts earlier this season.
"Danielle is going to bring more physicality to the team," said Salyer. "She comes with a tremendous amount of experience, playing at the highest levels in Canada."
Robinson comes from the same program that sophomore Allison Campbell came from two years ago. She was a member of the Pacific Storm Water Polo Club for three consecutive seasons and Burnaby Water Polo Club for four seasons prior. She also received a Level 1 NCCP WP Coaching Certificate this past year.
Respondek awarded Defensive Player of the Year, also attended the Olympic Development Program for two years.
"Zoe has been described as the energizer bunny with constant energy and constant motion," said Salyer. "She will bring a presence and energy to our team to propel our team toward championships."
Respondek was a member of the Raider Water Polo Club for three years and Neptune Water Polo Club for three years before that. She was named second team all-county in 2009 and 2010 all while maintaining a 4.375 GPA.
