ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- United States Naval Academy water polo head coach Mike Schofield has released a challenging 2011 schedule that features the annual Navy Labor Day Open as well as a trip to California where the Midshipmen will face 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Tournament participant Loyola Marymount University.
Navy will open the 2011 season with its annual Labor Day Open, which features several collegiate and club teams from around the country, on September 2-4 in both Lejeune Hall and Scott Natatorium. The Midshipmen went 8-0 in last year's event.
The next weekend, Navy will head to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bucknell Univeristy Invitational to face off against a slew of strong Eastern squads. The Midshipmen saw Eastern powers Brown University and 2010 Eastern Champion St. Francis College (N.Y.) a year ago at the event, defeating Brown, but falling to St. Francis 10-8 in what became a preview of the CWPA Eastern title match.
Navy then heads west the following weekend to play seven games in three days in San Diego and Claremont, Calif. On Friday, September 16, Navy will face Whittier College and the University of California-San Diego. On Saturday, Navy will take on Loyola Marymount, California Baptist University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and the Midshipmen will conclude play on Sunday against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and the University of Redlands.
The Midshipmen will then open up league play at home on September 24 against two of its bigger rivals in the pool. The Mids will take on Princeton University and Bucknell at 11:00 am and 7:00 pm, respectively, in Scott Natatorium in Macdonough Hall. Navy and Princeton played three times a year ago with Navy winning two of them, including a thrilling 7-6 overtime sudden-victory decision in late October and an 8-5 victory in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Tournament semifinals.
After taking the next two weekends off, the Midshipmen return to the road for its annual two-game in two-city Beltway roadtrip against Johns Hopkins University and George Washington University on Wednesday, October 12. Navy will take on Johns Hopkins in Baltimore at 4:00 pm, then will head to the Washington, D.C., to face George Washington at 8:15 pm.
On Saturday, October 15, Navy faces another grueling excursion with its second two-game in two-city roadtrip of the week. Navy faces Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., at 11:30 am, then hits the road to face Princeton at 7:00 pm in Princeton, N.J.
Navy ends the regular season on October 29, by hosting Johns Hopkins (11:00 am) and George Washington (2:00 pm).
The CWPA Southern Division Championship will be held on November 4-6, in Princeton, N.J., while the CWPA Eastern Championship is currently set for November 18-20, on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The NCAA Tournament is at the Uniersity of California in Berkeley, California, on December 3-4.
Navy finished 25-7 a year ago while competing in the CWPA Eastern Championship title game for the sixth consecutive year. Head coach Mike Schofield, who is entering his 27th year at Navy with a 578-223 record, welcomes back 15 of his top 19 scorers from a year ago including 2010 first-team all-East performers Kyle Wertz and Stevie Ray.
