Johns Hopkins University's Jeremy Selbst Named 2011 CWPA Men's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces the selection of Johns Hopkins University senior Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) as the recipient of the 2011 Men's Varsity Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

The highest honor bestowed by the league to an active player, matched only by the induction of a former player to the CWPA Hall of Fame, the award recognizes an outstanding senior student-athlete who has achieved success in both the scholastic (3.25 or higher cumulative grade point average) and athletic arenas while possessing a spirit which provides service to the community.

Athletes were nominated by their respective Department of Athletics with each CWPA institution eligible to nominate a female student-athlete for the award with the recipient being selected based on a points system derived from Community Service, CWPA Academic Honors, Scholastic Achievement and All-Conference/All-Eastern Tournament selections over their career.

Selbst's selection marks the third time the award has been presented by the league to a men's varsity student-athlete as Egen Atkinson of Harvard University and Josh Kratz of Johns Hopkins earned laurels in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year award adds to a litany of accolades that Selbst earned during his senior season.

A 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Men's At-Large College Division First Team honoree as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), he became the first two-time Academic All-America selection in Blue Jays' water polo history as he garnered third team honors in 2010.  He accounts for two of the JHU water polo team's three all-time Academic All-America selections, joining 2001 first team selection Zaman Mirzadeh. The 29th athlete in Johns Hopkins history to earn First Team Academic All-America honors from CoSIDA , he became the 17th JHU athlete to be selected twice.

A two-time Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America pick earning Second Team honors in 2009 and First Team honors in 2010, Selbst made a school-record 320 saves with 23 assists and 97 steals in 2010 as the starting goalie on the Blue Jays' Division III top-ranked water polo team,

He led the nation, among all divisions, in saves in 2010 and ranked fourth in 2009 with 289. He earned Second Team Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-South and All-East honors as the Blue Jays finished the year tied for the top spot in the final Division III poll.

As a junior, Selbst led the team in saves and steals (90) while leading Hopkins to its 12th Division III Eastern Championship and third-place finishes at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and CWPA Southern Division Championships.

He finished his career with 662 saves, 197 steals and 43 assists.

Selbst also excels outside of the pool as a three-time CWPA and ACWPC Scholar-Athlete. A double major in economics and psychology with a 3.64 cumulative GPA, he interned with the Federal Bureau of Investigation on an advertising and marketing campaign, as well as with JukeBox Television and T. Rowe Price while at Hopkins.

He began work in economic consulting as an analyst for Charles River Associates upon graduation last month.
