Johns Hopkins University Releases 2010 Men's Water Polo Schedule
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The Johns Hopkins University Department of Athletics has released the Blue Jays 2010 schedule of games for the upcoming 2010 men's water polo season.
Hopkins will open the season at the Navy Open at the United States Naval Academy on September 4-5 before treking to New Jersey to participate in the Princeton University Invitational on September 10-11.
The Blue Jays will have an early shot to capture a championship as the squad earned the No. 4 seed for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship on September 17-19 hostedy by Harvard University. Hopkins could face No. 1 seed Bucknell University, No. 2 Princeton, No. 3 St. Francis College (N.Y.), No. 5 Brown University, No. 6 Fordham University, No. 7 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, No. 8 Iona College, No. 9 George Washington University, No. 10 Harvard, No. 11 Mercyhurst College and/or No. 12 Washington & Jefferson.
In the history of the championship, Johns Hopkins will seek to return to the ECAC title game for the second time in three seasons as the squad reached the 2008 tilt before falling to St. Francis.
Following the ECAC Championship, Hopkins will open Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Division-East Region league play with back-to-back-to-back home games against Bucknell (September 24), Princeton (September 25) and Navy (October 6).
The Blue Jays will then fly west to compete in the Claremont Convergence hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on October 7-9 before returning home for consecutive CWPA Southern Division games at Bucknell (October 15) and Princeton (October 16).
One week later, Johns Hopkins will seek to continue a run of dominance at the Division III Eastern Championship hosted by Connecticut College against the Camels, MIT, Washingtwon & Jefferson and Pennsylvania State University-The Behrend College. In the history of the championship, Hopkins has appeared in 18-of-19 title games capturing 12 crowns (1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009). The year the Blue Jays did not appear in the title game (2007), Johns Hopkins elected not to compete and participated in another event.
League play will resume on October 27 at George Washington before the regular season concludes on October 30 at Navy when Hopkins takes on the host Midshipmen and George Washington in a neutral site game.
The postseason begins where the regular season concluded as Hopkins and the rest of the Southern Division will return to Navy on November 5-7 for the 2010 Southern Division Championship hosted by Navy.
If the Blue Jays finish among the top four teams in the South, Johns Hopkins will advance to the newly redubbed CWPA Eastern Championship on November 19-21 in Lewisburg, Pa. on the campus of Bucknell. The four best teams from the Northern and Southern Divisions, will clash in an eight-team tournament for the league's title and a berth to the NCAA Championship to be held on December 4-5 at the University of California.
Hopkins will be seeking its fifth consecutive berth in the Eastern field and will look to make history as no Division III team has advanced to the league title game since the tournament began in 1972.
