Water Polo Prepares to Join VMI Family of Sports
LEXINGTON, Va. --
Women’s water polo, the newest Division I sport to be added
to the Virginia Military Institute's successful athletic program,
is getting ready to make a splash onto the VMI intercollegiate
athletic program scene.
Head coach Anna Phelps officially assumed her duties on July 1, 2010 and will use the 2010-2011 school year to recruit for the inaugural season which will commence at the beginning of the 2012 athletic season.
The recruiting year has started off with travels to the Junior Olympics tournament in Southern California and will continue throughout the year as the newly hired Phelps and her assistant, husband Jeff Phelps, begin to build what will be VMI's seventh women's sport. With nearly 25 years of Water Polo experience, the duo is taking the 2010-2011 school year to find the best possible candidates for new team.
"I am going to take most of this year and scour the country for the best possible talent both in the pool and in the classroom to represent the Institute in the finest way possible," said Phelps.
"We will look for student-athletes who are natural leaders, display the ability to work hard toward achieving goals, and who possess a winning attitude."
"Everyone at VMI has been extremely receptive to starting the program. From the administration to the athletics department, to the cadets on campus, I have felt so welcomed and really looking forward to having my players be part of this fantastic community. Equally exciting is the fact that since the announcement of the program, the water polo community has been buzzing about the opportunity this creates for women who would like to play polo on the east coast. VMI is the only military school to offer women's water polo as a school sponsored sport (varsity), so this creates an additional venue for women to get a great education and play the sport they love at the same time."
