MIT Outlasts Johns Hopkins 9-7 to Claim Division III Eastern Championship; Preis Named MVP
NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), seeded fourth in the field by the head coaches, won three of its four matches and outlasted Johns Hopkins University in a 9-7 triumph Sunday to win the Division III Eastern Championship at Connecticut College.
Senior center John Preis scored nine goals over the weekend to lead the Engineers and earn honors as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Brian Gardiner and goalie Columbus Leonard joined Preis on the first team for the champion Engineers.
Johns Hopkins (12-11) went 2-1 for the weekend to finish as the runner-up. Sophomore Alex Whittam and Ross Schofield garnered All-Tournament First Team honors for the Blue Jays. Whittam exploded with 12 markers while Schofield added six scores.
The Behrend Lions of Penn State (6-18) finished fourth with a 1-3 record. Colin McGarry scored three of his six goals in a 15-9 victory against the Presidents of W&J on Sunday to lead the Bears as a second team selection on the all-tournament team.
W&J (5-15) finished fifth with a 1-3 record as Bill Krause garnered All-Tournament First Team honors and led the Presidents with seven goals.
