CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Iona College men's water polo team opened play Saturday at the 2010 Northern Division Championship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the seventh seed Gaels fell to second seeded Brown University by the score of 12-6. The Gaels earned entry into the fifth place contest tomorrow with a 14-13 victory over sixth seeded Queens College.
Against the Bears, the Gaels had two goal efforts from juniors Cameron Hudson and Matt Joslyn. Hudson also added two steals on the defensive end. Freshmen Sean Davis and Jonathan Hernould were responsible for the other goals as Davis also had an assist in the contest. Senior Seth Tasman had an assist and drew two kickouts.
"We weren't able to generate offense throughout the contest," said coach Brian Kelly. "Brown is a veteran squad and they were able to consistently outplay us and that's why they got the win."
Freshman goalie Stefen Hill had five saves in the contest. Against Queens College, the Gaels were able to play much better offensively and came out with a one goal victory over the Knights.
"We were able to able to execute a much more balance attack in game two and the result speaks to that," said Kelly.
Hudson was the top scorer with three goals. Junior Trevor Creighton had three goals in his second contest back from injury. Joslyn had two allies for Iona as did Tasman. Tasman also had two assists and a field block.
Sophomore Kristian Bocage had a goal and an assist with two steals. Sophomore Cody Siemeck found the goal for the Gaels in the contest as did freshman Matthew Stelnicki. Davis had a goal and an assist with a steal while freshman Lee Stiles had an assist. Hill had eight saves for the Gaels with an assist and two steals.
The Gaels will compete for fifth place tomorrow morning at 11:30 against fifth seeded Harvard University.
