Princeton University's Merlone Named November 8 Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week
BRIDEGEPORT, Pa. -- Princeton University goalie Mike Merlone (Sr., Atherton, Calif./The Menlo School) earned three wins in cage during the No. 17 Tigers' run to the 2010 Southern Division Championship and earn the November 8 Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week award. He posted 27 saves during the three victories in 10 periods of play in keying the Tigers to a return trip to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship.
The accolade marks the third time this season Merlone has garnered a weekly honor from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) as he previously picked up the September 13 and October 11 Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week awards.
He played the first half of a 13-4 opening round victory against Gannon University with four saves to help the Tigers clinch a berth to the 2010 CWPA Eastern Championship. In the semifinals against Johns Hopkins University, he posted 10 saves before recording 13 stops in an 8-6 Southern Division title game victory against fellow No. 17 ranked Bucknell University.
In addition to his defensive stats between the pipes, he tallied five assists and four steals as the Tigers will continue the season on November 19-21 at Bucknell with hopes of repeating their 2009 title at the CWPA Eastern Championship.
