No. 20 Brown Doubles-Up Johns Hopkins 10-5 in CWPA Eastern Championship Fifth Place Game
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Svetozar Stefanovic (So., Belgrade, Serbia/Russian Embassy) scored five times to account for the winning margin as the No. 20-ranked Bears of Brown University doubled-up Johns Hopkins University 10-5 in the fifth place game of the 2010 CWPA Eastern Championship at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium. Brown improves to 2-0 against JHU this year and finishes the season at 18-12.
The story of the game was Brown's ability to draw ejections and cash in on the chances as the Bears drew eight and converted on six, while Hopkins also drew eight but failed to put one in the back of the net.
Leading 5-4 at halftime, Brown outscored the Blue Jays 5-1 in the second half to roll to the victory and move to 2-0 against JHU in 2010 following a 10-9 victory in overtime during the regular season.
Brown started the run with 3:51 left in the third period as Ryan Gladych (So., Corona del Mar, Calif./Deerfield Academy) finished a pass before James McNamara (Fr., Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) converted a 6-on-5 chance with 58 seconds remaining to make it 7-4.
The margin expanded to 8-4 to open the fourth period as Stefanovic wrapped a shot around the near post at the 5:44 mark. Hopkins broke-up the scoring spree at 4:38 with a strike by Kielan Crow (So., Portola Valley, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding), but the Bears came out of scoring hibernation at 4:15 with a man-up tally by Gordon Hood (Sr., Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad).
Corey Schwartz (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) closed out the game and both Brown and JHU's seasons with another advantage score at 3:15 for the 10-5 final.
Overall, John Barrett (Sr., Clarendon Hills, Calif./Fenwick) and Ross Schofield (So., Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) powered Johns Hopkins with pairs of goals in addition to Crow's tally.
Schwartz tacked on a pair of scores for the Bears, with single markers by Hood, McNamara and Gladych accounting for all of Brown's offense not handled by Stefanovic.
In cage, Walter Shockley (Fr., Diamond Bar, Calif./Damien) made seven saves to claim the win, while Jeremy Selbst (Sr., Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) suffered the loss with eight blocks.
