Carthage College Manages Chatham University 10-6 to Reach Division III Eastern Championship Fifth Place Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Carthage College earned a spot in the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship fifth place game as the Lady Reds sank Chatham University 10-6.

The Lady Reds never trailed in the game opening up a 4-2 lead by the end of the first period, expanding the margin to 7-3 by halftime and carrying an 8-5 advantage into the fourth period.

Overall, Carthage picked up the win by outscoring Chatham's Sachelle Taylor (So., Brooklyn, N.Y./Holy Childhood) who notched five of the Cougars' scores in the contest.

Mari Paraskevopoulos (Jr., Mount Prospect, Ill./Arlington Heights-Hersey) opened the scoring for Carthage with 5:03 left in the opening period.  Taylor netted the equalizer at 4:20, but the Lady Reds ripped out three consecutive scores as Hillary Veselik (Fr., Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) found the cage at 4:08 and 2:09.  Division III Player of the Year Kimmy Genian (Sr., Gurnee, Ill./Highland Park) completed the scoring spurt at 1:46 with the only man-up tally of the contest to make it 4-1 in favor of Carthage.

Lauren Burrows (Fr., North Canton, Ohio/Glenwood) moved the Cougars back to within prior to the end of the period as she fired a shot into the back of the cage with 11 seconds remaining to make it a 4-2 game entering the second period.

Carthage began to pull away in the second frame as Paraskevopoulos, Genian and Veselik beat Chatham goaltender Allison Bodine (Jr., Frederick, Md./Urbana) at 5:08, 3:55 and 1:47, respectively to construct a 7-2 lead for the Lady Reds. Taylor responded with her second marker of the day 15 seconds following Veselik's blast to set the scoreboard at 7-3 in favor of Carthage at the break.
