Utica College Manages Penn State-Behrend 9-5 to Clinch Berth in 2011 Division III Eastern Championship Seventh Place Game

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Utica College outscored Pennsylvania State University-Behrend 7-3 over the final 24 minutes of play for the differnece as the Pioneers handled the Behrend Lions 9-5 to earn a berth in the seventh place game of the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship at Macalster College's Leonard Natatorium.

The victory marked the first of the tournament for Utica which improves to 1-2 with a date against Chatham College in thet seventh place game set for 1:15 p.m. later today.

PSU-Behrend jumped out to the lead in the first period via back-to-back goals by MaryEllen Spooner (So., Springfield, Va./West Springfield) at 3:31 and Racheal Ragen (Fr., Erie, Pa./Iroquois) at 1:58 to apparently take control of the game.  However, Utica answered with a pair of goals from Player of the Game Evelyn Kurzac (Fr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein Cons) with goals at 1:04 and a last ditch buzzer-beater with a second remaining to beat the quarter horn.

The Lion's retook the lead on their first advantage chance of the second period as Ragen blazed a shot to beat Utica's goalie Kera Langdon (Sr., Remsen, N.Y./Holland Patent) and put PSU-Behrend in front 3-2.

Neither team was able to build on the score until the final two minutes of the first half when Jacqueline Braca (Fr., Phoenixville, Pa./The Hill School) broke free to net her first goal of the weekend and tie the game at 3-3. A short time later, Amanda Sulicz (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla./Lake Worth) contributed the Pioneers' second marker of the period to hand Utica a 4-3 lead at halftime.

The one goal lead would not last long as the Pioneers were able to convert on their even-strength chances and hold PSU-Behrend to one-of-nine shooting on man-up opportunities, including 0-for-6 in the second half, to down the Behrend Lions for the third time this season (11-2 W, 7-2 W, 9-5 W).

Penn State-Behrend concludes the tournament with an 0-3 record as the team returns home to Erie with a ninth place finish in the conference championship tournament.
