ST. PAUL, Minn. --
Chatham University got five goals from Sachelle Taylor
(So., Brooklyn, N.Y./Holy Childhood) to lead the Cougars
to a 13-11 victory over Utica College in the 2011 Collegiate Water
Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Eastern Championship seventh
Chatham, which concludes the weekend with a 2-2 mark, entered the championship as the fifth seed while the Pioneers were seeded at seventh. The two squads faced-off once this season back in the first weekend of league competition and it was Chatham who doubled the score of Utica notching a 16-8 victory.
The Pioneers had two great opportunities to take an early lead after Chatham was called for an exclusion on a pullback during a drive at 5:15 against Annalies Layton (So., Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Alldercie) and later a penalty for holding after Lauren Borrows (Sr., North Canton, Ohio/Glenwood) was turned while playing the two-meter defensive position.
Utica's failure to convert resulted in a scoring frenzy by Chatham as Paige Dunlap (Sr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwod) ripped three goals into the netting during the first period at 3:35, 2:50 and :33 respectively. Burrows completed the four point first quarter as she netted her second goal of the tournament.
Going into the halftime break, Utica was able to correct its course after holding the Cougars scoreless in the period and completing a three goal run of their own thanks to the efforts of Evelyn Kurzac (Fr., Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein Cons) scoring two points and one by Jacqueline Braca (Fr., Phoenixville, Pa./The Hill School).
The remainder of the game consisted of the two squads trading goals until 4:19 in the fourth quarter when the Cougars made another strong run to build a three goal lead. The Pioneers were not ready to settle as they continued to push forward in order to stay within striking distance.
The eventual game winning goal was scored by Natty Burford (So., Temeculah, Calif./Temculah) at 4:43 remaining in the match. Burford's point came during an extra woman opportunity when she received the ball on a pass to her post.
Lisa Torii (Jr., Rosemont, Ill./St. Viator) helped to pull Utica within one goal at 2:25 remaining in the fourth but her team could not get any closer as Chatham scored one final point by Selina Breiner (Jr., Moon Township, Pa./Moon) at 1:25 giving the Cougars a 13-11 victory over the Pioneers.
The leading scorers for both squads were impressive in all their matches. For Chatham, Taylor netted sixteen points in four games while Kurzac reached the ten goal mark for Utica.
