ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The No. 2 seed Grove City College proved worthy of their school mascot as the Wolverines ripped into No. 7 seed Utica College 16-3 in the second game of the 2011 Women's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at Macalester College.
Six Wolverines accounted for the first eight goals of the game with Brittany LaPalme (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) and Andrea Wilson (Jr., Newberg, Ore./Veritas School), each netting two apiece, and Kristi Baur (Fr., North Wales, Pa.), Lauren Baur (Sr., North Wales, Pa./North Penn), Chelsea Johnson (Jr., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Amanda Brush (Jr., Charlton, N.Y./Schnectady Christian) scoring the remaining four points.
It wasn't until 1:38 remaining in the first half when the Pioneers' Amanda Sulicz (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla./Lake Worth) notched the team's first point of the game. This also erased the potential first half shut out by Grove City's Amanda Johnston (San Luis Obispo, Ca./San Luis Obispo) who finished the match with nine saves.
Sulicz went on to score two additional goals in the second half and account for all three of Utica's points in the competition. For Grove City, two players tied for leading scorers with LaPalme and Johnson both reaching the four goal marker. Johnson's strong play on both sides of the ball earned her the player of the game as the Wolverines cruised to a 16-3 win.
Grove City College will play in the first semi-final game later this afternoon as they continue on their quest to repeat as the CWPA Division III Champions. They will face the winner of game 3 between Wheaton College and Connecticut College.
Utica College will play next at 3:15 p.m. against the loser of the Wheaton-Connecticut College match.
