Washington & Jefferson College Revolts Versus Chatham University for 9-6 Victory in CWPA Division III Eastern Championship Quarterfinal

McKenzie Graf

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- No. 4 seed Washington & Jefferson College took control of the game early thanks to Player of the Game Katie Weiber (Sr., Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and the defensive wall created by goalie McKenzie Graf (So., Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) as the Presidents marched to a 9-6 victory over the Cougars of Chatham University in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Division III Eastern Championship hosted by Macalester College.

Weiber pumped in two of her three goals in the first quarter, while teammates Margot Wummer (Fr., Havertown, Pa./Germantown Academy), Caitlin Brown (Sr., Milford, Ohio/Milford) and Catherine Villa (Fr., Poway, Calif./Poway) each netted their own to give Washington & Jefferson a commanding 5-0 lead by the conclusion of the first period of action.

The Presidents continued their offensive attack in the second quarter as Sarah Cull (Jr., Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) put away her first marker off a rebound following a block by Cougars' goalie Allison Bodine (Jr., Frederick, Md./Urbana). Wummer finished the scoring of the first half with a shot from outside with only :13 remaining as W&J went to the side with a commanding 7-0 through 16 minutes.

Although the Cougars were getting some solid looks in the first half and put a majority of their shots on cage, Graf would not be denied her shutout between the pipes and stopped all eight attempts taken by Chatham before the midgame break.

In the second half, Chatham was able to find a few cracks in Graf's wall as they began putting their shots away. Sachelle Taylor (So., Brooklyn, N.Y./Holy Childhood) and Selina Breiner (Jr., Moon Township, Pa./Moon) each netted pairs, while Paige Dunlap (Sr., Greenwood, Ind./Grennwood) and Natty Burford (So., Temeculah, Calif./Temeculah) rounded out the scoring for the Cougars with solo tallies to account for the squad's six goals.

Although comfortably in the lead by halftime, the Presidents would not have their potential for victory impeached as Weiber and Kate Van Schaik (Sr., Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) combined to toss in a pair of goals in the third period to guarantee victory.

Thanks to the win, the Presidents claimed a berth in the tournament semifinals, as the Presidents will face the victor from another quarterfinal game between the top-seeded and No. 8-nationally ranked Lady Reds of Carthage College and the host Scots of Macalester College.

Chatham will face Pennsylvania State University-Behrend at 6:00 p.m. later this evening with a slot in the fifth place game on the line.
