BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Elina Goldenberg (Jr., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored three times, including the sole goal of the fourth period, as No. 19-ranked the University of Maryland grounded No. 12 Hartwick College 7-6 in the 2011 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Championship third place game.

The third place finish marks the second time in three years the Terrapins captured the third place game as Maryland downed Brown University 12-8 in the 2009 championship's third place game at Harvard University.

Both teams struggled on offense during the early going as Hartwick tallied the only score of the first period when Allyssa  Analytis (Jr., Montreal, Quebec) ripped home a shot with 6:15 remaining the quarter for a 1-0 lead.

Hartwick expanded the lead to 2-0 58 seconds into the second period when Sasha Freeborn (So., Auckland, New Zealand) converted on a five-meter penalty shot, but the Terrapins were not slow in responding to erase the deficit.

Maryland used goals from Coronado High School alums Maddie Murphy (Fr., Coronado, Calif./Coronado) and Carly Hoshko (Jr., Coronado, Calif./Coronado) to pull even as the duo found the back of the cage at 5:28 and 4:52, respectively, to equalize the score at two-all.

Hartwick went back in front prior to halftime when Lisa Bass (Jr., Montreal, Quebec) cocked and fired a shot on a man-up opportunity with 1:26 glowing on the clock to give the Hawks a narrow 3-2 lead at the break.

The Hawks continued to control the pace of the game as Bass bashed Maryland with another advantage score at 7:31 of the third period to build the spread to 4-2, but the Terrapins would not roll over on their shells.

Meghan Powers (Sr., Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos) started Maryland's second comeback of the day with a rising shot at 7:03 and Allison Campbell (So., Maple Ridge, B.C./Maple Ridge) netted the equalizer at 5:57 to balance the scoreboard at 4-4.

Hartwick went back in front at 4:11 with another tally by Bass, but Maryland responded in short order with a marker by Goldenberg at 3:59 to make it 5-5.

Maryland took the lead for the first time at 2:36 when Goldenberg pushed a ball into the cage, but Hartwick was the one to counter at 2:21 via another goal by Freeborn and keep the teams in a perpetual dance of countering the other's moves.

Needing a hero to standout and take command of the contest, Goldenberg stepped to the forefront breaking loose for an advantage goal with 2:35 left in the fourth period to net the game-winner and lock-up Player of the Game honors.

Equally as important to the Terrapins' victory was the play of goalie Shelby Reyes (Jr., Miami, Fla./Gulliver) who contributed 11 saves to earn the victory.

For Hartwick, Bass led the way with a hat-trick, while Freeborn and Analytis combined for other half of the Hawks' offensive output.  In cage, Jessica Dorman (Sr., Auckland, New Zealand) stopped six shots in her final collegiate contest.
