• NCAA Men's Water Polo Championship Comes to Cal in 2010 & 2011

    The University of California will host the NCAA Men's Water Polo Tournament for the first time this December, putting the championship in a pool that has produced more collegiate water polo crowns than any in history. Dating back to their first title in 1973, the Golden Bears have captured the national title 13 times, and Spieker Aquatics Complex will move to center stage this December 4-5 when Cal hopes to compete for another championship against USC, St. Francis and Loyola Marymount.

In the first game, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) champion the University of Southern California (26-2) will play the Terriers (24-3) at 1:00 p.m. on December 4. The third-place game will be played at 1 p.m. Pacific time, December 5, with the championship game at 3 p.m. Pacific time.

    The Collegiate Water Polo Association to aid in ranking of the varsity teams around the nation, compiles a list of varsity scores from each of the conferences and independent institutions. These scores reflect competition against four-year institutions and are forwarded to the National Collegiate Athletic Association for use in compiling each program's RPI. Only competition against four-year colleges is compiled to provide an equal basis for each team's ranking in the national polls.

    The NCAA Men’s Water Polo Committee announced today the four teams participating in the 2010 National Collegiate Men’s Water Polo Championship. This year’s championship, hosted by the University of California, Berkeley, will be held December 4-5. In the first game, Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) champion the University of Southern California (26-2) will play Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) champion St. Francis College (24-3). The second game will match at-large selection the University of California (23-3) versus Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) champion Loyola Marymount University (19-8). Game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific time respectively on December 4. The third-place game will be played at 1 p.m. Pacific time, December 5, with the championship game at 3 p.m. Pacific time. The national championship game will be streamed live on www.NCAA.com.

"We put a strong emphasis on our captain's role and I am happy that the team appreciates what Cara Reitz did last year and that she will be returning in that position for a second season and that they are excited that Meagan Cobb will also wear the C," Anderson said. "Both those young ladies understand the importance of being in a leadership position and are happy to embrace the challenge that comes with it."

    Former Arizona State varsity women’s water polo assistant and head men’s club coach Ryan Castle has been hired as assistant coach of Hartwick College’s Division I women’s water polo program, effective immediately. Castle arrives at Hartwick with an extensive coaching background at the club, high school, college, and international level. A native of Cape Town, South Africa, Castle spent the last three seasons working to elevate the Sun Devil water polo programs.
  • Catching Up with Maryland Water Polo Alums Elizabeth Hopkins & Jill Lau

    A number of former Maryland water polo players have continued their careers on the professional and international level. Two former standouts were Elizabeth Hopkins and Jill Lau. Hopkins is currently playing for Club Esportiu Mediterrani in Madrid. Her team placed second in the Copa de Catalunya and this weekend the squad has its first home game within the Division de Honor. The team will be introduced to the club members at a luncheon. Lau is a member of the Hong Kong National Team. She was the leading scorer for the team in the Asian Pacific Games which were held in August.
