University of Michigan's Kiki Golden & Kelsey Nolan Share April 16 Western Division Player of the Week Award
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- University of Michigan duo Kiki Golden (Jr., Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) and Kelsey Nolan (So., San Jose, Calif./Leland) combined for 13 goals and 10 assists to share the April 16 Women's Varsity Western Division Player of the Week award for keying the No. 13 Wolverines to the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Championship at Indiana University.
The pair each dominated a game for the Wolverines who rolled past Notre Dame College (20-4 W), No. 12 Indiana (10-7 W) and No. 19 Hartwick College (7-6 W) to claim the program's 11th consecutive division crown, including nine straight Western Division titles.
Nolan, who finished with seven goals and seven assists over the weekend, spearheaded Michigan's offense in a semifinal matchup against the host Hoosiers. Trailing 6-3, Nolan orchestrated a Maize & Blue comeback as she scored four times to account for over half of a 7-1 Michgian run to the final buzzer. She knotted the game at six-all and gave the Wolverines' the lead for good at 7-6 in the early moments of the fourth quarter.
In addition, she assisted on the game-winning goal by Golden in the closing seconds of the title game against Hartwick and finished with a goal and three assists against the Hawks.
The weekly honor marks the fourth of her career, and third of the 2012 season, as she previously garnered the February 6 Defensive Player of the Week and March 12 co-Player of the Week of the past several weeks. In addition, she claimed the February 1 Western Division Rookie of the Week in 2011.
For Golden, her performance against Hartwick matched her surname as she tossed in four goals on six shots and tallied a game-high three steals when in mattered most for the Maize & Blue.
Her fourth and final tally of the day off an assist from Nolan carried the most weight as it was the game-winner against Hartwick and keyed Michigan to another Western Division title.
Overall, she finished the weekend against Notre Dame, Indiana and the Hawks with six goals, three assists, two field blocks and ten steals as she also earned laurels as the April 16 Western Division Defensive Player of the Week.
The honor marks the third top billing of Golden's career as she was the CWPA Western Division Player of the Week on February 6, 2012 and co-Player of the Week on April 13, 2011. Golden has also earned three CWPA Western Division Defensive Player of the Week awards (2012 - April 16; 2011 - January 31; 2010 - February 22) and was named top rookie three times during her freshman year in 2010 (January 25, March 29, April 26).
