ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst University women's water polo team won, 17-16 in overtime, at Gannon University in non-league action. Lisett Calderon scored six goals, including the game-winner with 1:06 left in the second overtime period, to lead the Lakers.
After playing 32 minutes and seeing the score tied at 15, the teams went into overtime. Each side scored a goal in the first extra frame. In the second overtime period, Calderon was fouled and scored on a five-meter shot with 66 seconds remaining. The Lakers survived a frantic final minute, as Hope Rozelle made a save and the action went all the way up to the final horn.
It was a taut and tense affair throughout, as a raucous crowd saw a back-and-forth contest. The teams were tied at three after one quarter, but five Gannon goals in the second quarter gave the hosts an 8-5 halftime advantage. Mercyhurst made a run in the third quarter, getting within 10-9 before a late Knight score made it a two-goal difference. Mercyhurst recorded six fourth-period goals to send the game into overtime.
Calderon finished with six scores and five assists. Kimberly Goodhart had five goals and three steals, while Bella Hersh and Laura Perez each scored twice. Rozelle made 16 saves in net. Allie Grimes and Kylie McCormich each had a goal, as Grimes dished out three assists and Trish Armsrong had two. Perez totaled six drawn ejections.
Mercyhurst improved to 10-17 on the season and extended its regular season win streak over Gannon to six.
